Three times each day, sacrificing as many lives as Ganges grains of sand, across countless aeons
Each kalpa (劫) is an unimaginably long unit of cosmic time — the duration of one cycle of a universe. Across countless such aeons, three times per day, sacrificing Ganges-grain-numbers of lives each time. This is the ultimate escalation of the merit comparison: not just treasure, not just one's own life once, but every imaginable form of selfless sacrifice repeated across cosmological time. And still, the merit of genuine faith in this sutra surpasses it. The point is not mathematical — it is a statement about the nature of wisdom: no amount of conditioned action can substitute for a direct encounter with unconditioned reality.
This sutra has merit that is inconceivable, immeasurable, and boundless
Three superlatives: inconceivable (不可思议) — beyond the reach of discursive thought; immeasurable (不可称量) — no unit of measurement applies; boundless (无边) — no edge, no limit. These are not expressions of enthusiasm; they are precise descriptions of the unconditioned. The conditioned world operates through measurement, comparison, and boundary. Wisdom that touches the unconditioned simply does not fit those categories. You cannot weigh it, count it, or draw a line around it. That is precisely what makes it transformative: it is the one thing that is not limited by the conditions that limit everything else.
Such people bear and carry the Tathagata's unsurpassed enlightenment
To 'bear and carry' (荷担) is a beautifully physical image — like carrying something heavy on your shoulders, walking it from one place to another. Those who receive this wisdom and pass it on are carrying the Buddha's enlightenment through time and space. They become the living vehicle of the teaching. This is the Mahayana vision of the bodhisattva's role: not just to be personally liberated, but to be a conduit — to let the wisdom move through you into the world. Understanding creates responsibility.
Summary
Chapter 15 completes the sutra's long series of merit comparisons with its most extreme version: lifetimes of total self-sacrifice cannot match the merit of genuine faith in this teaching. The sutra's merit is inconceivable, immeasurable, and boundless — properties of the unconditioned that no conditioned action can produce. And those who receive and transmit this wisdom become carriers of the Buddha's enlightenment across time — bearers of something that cannot be hoarded, only passed on.
