The earth of the three-thousand-great-thousand world system split open, and from within it, immeasurable thousands of millions of bodhisattvas simultaneously emerged. Their bodies were all golden in colour, with the thirty-two marks and immeasurable light.
The emergence of the bodhisattvas from the earth is one of the great visionary moments in all of Buddhist scripture. These are not bodhisattvas from other worlds (those had already been there, offering to teach after the Buddha's passing in Ch. 13). These come from beneath this very world — from inside the earth of the saha world where we live. The image is extraordinary: the ground under our feet is not just dirt; it is the dwelling place of countless awakened beings, who have been here all along, waiting. This reverses our normal assumption about where the sacred is located: not above us, not in some distant pure land, but below, inside, within the very world we inhabit.
Maitreya Bodhisattva asks on behalf of the assembly: World-Honoured One, where do all these bodhisattvas come from? They do not appear to be disciples you have taught in this lifetime. He uses an analogy: it would be like a young man of forty claiming that these white-haired elders are his children — who would believe him?
Maitreya's question is perfectly natural, and it sets up one of the most profound teachings in the entire sutra. Shakyamuni Buddha appears to have lived one human lifetime of about eighty years. Yet these bodhisattvas — vast in number, ancient in appearance, deeply accomplished — have somehow been trained by him? The math doesn't work. Or rather, it doesn't work if you assume that the historical Buddha is the only dimension of the Buddha's existence. Chapter 16 will resolve this tension by revealing something that shatters the entire framework of historical time. Maitreya's puzzlement is the reader's puzzlement — and the sutra knows it.
These bodhisattvas have always been dwelling in the space beneath this saha world. When they heard the sound of Shakyamuni Buddha's voice, they emerged from below.
The detail that these beings have been dwelling beneath this world — beneath the saha world, the world of endurance and suffering — is theologically stunning. Pure lands in Buddhist cosmology are usually elsewhere: to the west (Amitabha's Pure Land), to the east (Akshobhya's), or beyond the ordinary universe. But these bodhisattvas are not elsewhere. They are here, under our feet. The saha world — the one we live in, with all its difficulty — contains, at its depths, an inexhaustible population of awakened beings. Suffering is on the surface. Beneath the surface: the ground of awakening. The earth we walk on is not what we think it is.
Among the bodhisattvas who emerge, four are foremost: Superior Practice (上行), Boundless Practice (无边行), Pure Practice (净行), and Steadfast Practice (安立行). These four names form a complete description of the bodhisattva path.
The four names are a compressed spiritual curriculum. Superior Practice points to practice that always moves upward — toward greater clarity, compassion, and awakening. Boundless Practice suggests practice without limit, without the comfortable stopping points of "enough." Pure Practice indicates conduct that is unmixed with self-interest or worldly concern. Steadfast Practice, the most grounded of the four, points to practice that remains stable in the face of all conditions. Together they describe a practitioner who is aspiring, unlimited, clean in motivation, and unshakeable. These four will be given specific responsibility in Chapter 21 and 22 for transmitting the sutra after the Buddha's passing.
Summary
Chapter 15 is the great pivot of the Lotus Sutra. Countless golden bodhisattvas erupt from beneath the earth — beings who have always been here, beneath this world of suffering, waiting for the right moment. Maitreya's question — how could a forty-year-old man claim these ancient beings as his disciples? — introduces the logical tension that Chapter 16 will resolve. The answer will require completely dismantling the assumption that Shakyamuni Buddha is simply a historical person who lived eighty years. Something much older, much vaster, is about to be revealed.
