Wonderful Sound Bodhisattva comes from the Adorned with Pure Light world in the east. He cultivated his practice by offering thirty-two thousand kinds of music to the Buddha there, and through this attained supernatural powers and wisdom.
Gadgadasvara (妙音, "Wonderful Sound") is unique among the Lotus Sutra's bodhisattvas in having a practice rooted in music. He did not attain his capacities through austerities, or sutra study, or meditation in isolation — he played and offered music, 32,000 varieties of it, as an act of devotion. The specific number — 32,000 — mirrors the 32 marks of a great being, suggesting a completeness, a totality of offering. This is the Lotus Sutra at its most inclusive regarding paths: music, genuine and full-hearted, is as valid a road to Buddhahood as any other. The medium of practice matters less than the quality of the offering.
Wonderful Sound Bodhisattva can manifest thirty-four different bodily forms — Buddha, bodhisattva, shravaka, Indra, lay-person, boy, girl, and many others — appearing in whatever form is most suitable for each being, and teaching the Lotus Sutra in that form.
The thirty-four transformation-bodies of Wonderful Sound Bodhisattva are the most comprehensive list of adaptive teaching in the sutra up to this point (Chapter 25 on Guanyin will extend this further). The principle is the same in each case: he does not ask the being to come to where he is, in the form he already has. He goes to where they are, takes the form they can recognise, and speaks to them in the terms they can understand. This is the bodhisattva vow made concrete and bodily: for the sake of this being, I will become whatever is needed. Not as performance, but as genuine compassion enacted through the flexibility of the awakened mind.
As Wonderful Sound Bodhisattva traverses the worlds on his way to Shakyamuni, each world he passes through trembles, flowers rain down, and the air fills with fragrance. His very movement through space is a dharma event.
The cosmic response to Wonderful Sound's travel is more than decoration. It reflects the Lotus Sutra's understanding of what an advanced bodhisattva is: not merely a person of good intentions or correct views, but a being whose presence actively transforms the environment. The trembling of worlds, the rain of flowers, the fragrance — these are the world's response to the passage of a being so thoroughly oriented toward awakening and the benefit of others that their movement through space has an effect. This is why the Lotus Sutra repeatedly emphasises the merit of encountering this bodhisattva or this teaching: the encounter itself is a transformative event, not just an exchange of information.
The bodhisattva Flower Virtue asks why Wonderful Sound's body appears unchanged despite the journey. The Buddha explains: his real body remains in his own pure land; the form that has arrived here is a transformation-body, manifested specifically for the beings of this world.
This exchange introduces the Mahayana doctrine of the transformation body (化身, nirmāṇakāya) at the bodhisattva level. The bodhisattva's "real" body — his complete, fully cultivated form — resides elsewhere; but he is capable of projecting appropriate forms into any world that needs teaching. This mirrors the Buddha's own situation as described in Chapter 16: the eternal Buddha is always present, but manifests in different forms appropriate to different beings and times. The teaching is that awakened beings can be simultaneously fully present in their own ground and fully responsive to beings wherever they are. This is not a trick; it is the natural expression of a mind that is not bound by ordinary limitations of location and form.
Summary
Chapter 24 introduces Wonderful Sound Bodhisattva, whose path to awakening ran through music — thirty-two thousand varieties of musical offering to his Buddha. From that practice, he gained the ability to manifest thirty-four different bodily forms, appearing to each being in whatever shape they can best receive teaching. His arrival transforms the worlds he passes through. His real body remains in his pure land while his transformation-body teaches in ours. The chapter celebrates the infinite adaptability of compassion: the bodhisattva meets every being exactly where they are, in exactly the form they need.
