Bestowal of prophecy (授记, vyākaraṇa) — the formal Buddha-prediction.
A vyākaraṇa is a Buddha's formal prediction that a specific being will attain full Buddhahood at a specific future time, in a specific world, under a specific name. In the Pali tradition, these prophecies are given only to bodhisattvas who have already made great vows across many lifetimes. The Lotus Sutra's radical move is to extend this prophecy to disciples who had previously been considered followers of the lesser path — people who, according to earlier Buddhist thinking, were headed for personal liberation (nirvana), not Buddhahood. By granting them prophecies, the Buddha is announcing that their path, too, leads to the summit. No one who has practised sincerely is excluded from full awakening.
My disciple Mahakashyapa, in a future age, will attend upon three hundred ten-thousand billion Buddhas, making offerings, paying honour, and propagating the immeasurable great Dharma of each Buddha.
Mahakashyapa (摩诃迦叶) is one of the most senior and revered of the Buddha's disciples. He is known for his strict ascetic discipline and is traditionally regarded as the first patriarch of Zen Buddhism — the one to whom the Buddha transmitted the wordless truth by holding up a flower. His prophecy of Buddhahood is therefore enormously significant to East Asian Buddhist traditions. The astronomical number of Buddhas he will serve — three hundred ten-thousand billion — is meant to convey the immensity of the bodhisattva path: it spans timescales that dwarf ordinary imagination. Yet the sutra presents this not as a burden but as a joy, a confirmation of a journey already underway.
In his final body, he will attain Buddhahood under the name Light Bright Tathagata. His land will be called Light Virtue, and the kalpa Great Adornment.
The Buddha-name "Light Bright" (光明) is not accidental. In Buddhist iconography, light represents wisdom — the illumination that dispels the darkness of ignorance. Mahakashyapa, who spent his life in austere practice, cutting through the thickets of attachment, will become a living embodiment of that clarity. The name "Great Adornment" (大庄严) for the cosmic age evokes the Avatamsaka Sutra's vision of a reality adorned with infinite jewels and light. The detail and specificity of the prophecy — Buddha-name, land-name, kalpa-name, and even the duration of the teaching — functions to make the distant future feel concrete and real. The path is not vague; it has a destination.
Subhuti, Maha-Katyayana, and Maha-Maudgalyayana also each receive prophecies of future Buddhahood in this chapter.
The group prophecy is theologically significant. Subhuti (须菩提) is the disciple who best understands emptiness — his dialogues with the Buddha form the core of the Diamond Sutra. Maha-Katyayana (大迦旃延) is famed for his ability to expound the Dharma through debate. Maha-Maudgalyayana (大目犍连) possesses the greatest supernatural powers. Each represents a different dimension of the Buddhist path. By granting all of them prophecies, the sutra makes the point comprehensive: whatever your particular gift or path, wherever you are on the journey, the destination is the same. The One Vehicle carries all of them. It carries all of us.
Summary
Chapter 6 begins the Lotus Sutra's series of individual prophecies of Buddhahood. Mahakashyapa, Subhuti, Maha-Katyayana, and Maha-Maudgalyayana — disciples previously considered to be on the shravaka path, aimed at personal liberation rather than Buddhahood — each receive a specific, detailed prediction of their future awakening. This is one of the Lotus Sutra's most dramatic gestures of inclusion. It takes the abstract claim of Chapter 2 (there is only One Vehicle) and makes it personal and concrete: not just "all beings" in general, but these specific, named individuals who are present in the assembly. The prophecy is not a reward for merit; it is a recognition of what has always been true.
