Meaning

Represents the shock of thunder and the power of awakening. Thunder repeated — shocking, arousing, frightening. Yet after the terror comes relief and laughter. The thunderstroke wakes us up, clears the air, and tests our inner composure. How one responds to sudden shock reveals character.

Six Yao (Lines) with Classical Quotes

1st Yao (初爻)

震来虧虧,后笑言哑哑,吉。

English: Thunder comes — oh so frightening! Then laughter and talk. Good fortune. First fear, then relief — the shock that awakens but does not destroy.

2nd Yao (二爻)

震来厉,乿丧贝,跳于九陵;勿逐,七日得。

English: Thunder comes — danger! A hundred thousand cowrie shells lost, climbing the nine hills. Do not pursue — after seven days you will get it back. Do not try to save what is lost in the shock; it will return on its own.

3rd Yao (三爻)

震苏苏,震行无眨。

English: Thunder comes — distracted and stumbling. If one acts through the shock without fault, there is no disaster. Disorientation in the shock is natural; keep moving forward.

4th Yao (四爻)

震遂泥。

English: Thunder sinks into the mud. The shock has lost its power to arouse; stagnation results.

5th Yao (五爻)

震往来厉,乿无丧,有事。

English: Thunder going and coming — dangerous. No great loss, but there are matters to attend to. Moving through repeated shocks without catastrophic loss, but much requires careful attention.

震索索,视矍矍,征凶;震不于其身,于其邻,无咎;婚婴有言。

English: Thunder brings trembling and fearful gazing around. Going forward is misfortune. But if the shock does not strike one's own person but one's neighbor — no blame. But there will be words among those seeking union. Being on the edge of but not struck by catastrophe brings no fault, but the event creates talk.
