"Those with further training" (有学, sekha) refers to practitioners who have entered the path but not yet completed it. "Those beyond training" (无学, asekha) refers to arhats who have completed the path and attained liberation. This chapter grants prophecies of Buddhahood to both.
The Pali Buddhist tradition uses "sekha" and "asekha" as technical terms. A sekha has entered the path (at minimum, the first stage of stream-entry) but still has work to do. An asekha has completed all the training and is free from the cycle of rebirth. The Lotus Sutra's decision to address both groups together is inclusive by design: the invitation to Buddhahood is not reserved for those who have "graduated." It is extended to everyone on the path, at every stage. The chapter essentially says: wherever you are on the journey, the same destination awaits.
Ananda and Rahula think to themselves: how wonderful it would be if we too received a prophecy! They rise from their seats and, approaching the Buddha, bow at his feet and together say: We too should have a share in this, World-Honoured One.
This is one of the most endearing moments in the entire sutra. Ananda and Rahula — the Buddha's closest attendant and his own son — watch as prophecy after prophecy is given out, and they simply cannot contain their longing. There is no shame in this; the text presents their request as natural and beautiful. Ananda's role as the keeper of the Dharma (护持法藏) and Rahula's identity as the Buddha's own son are invoked not as claims to special treatment, but as the context for their aspiration. They want what every sincere practitioner wants: the assurance that the journey leads somewhere, that their efforts are not in vain, that the destination is real.
The Buddha grants Ananda a prophecy: he will become a Buddha named Mountain Sea Wisdom Unimpeded Power King Tathagata.
Ananda's Buddha-name is a compressed portrait of his qualities. "Mountain" suggests the immovable stability of his memory and devotion. "Sea" evokes the vast depth of his learning. "Wisdom" points to the clarity he will develop across countless future lifetimes. "Unimpeded Power" speaks to the freedom of full Buddhahood. Ananda spent his entire life as the Buddha's attendant, memorising every discourse, every conversation, every detail. At the First Buddhist Council after the Buddha's death, he recited the entirety of the sutras from memory — thus giving us the Dharma we have today. His prophecy feels earned not as a reward but as a natural unfolding of who he already is.
Rahula also receives a prophecy. He will become a Buddha named Treading on Seven-Jewel Flowers Tathagata.
Rahula (罗睺罗) was Siddhartha Gautama's son, born the very night his father left home to seek enlightenment. In Buddhist tradition, Rahula is honoured as "foremost in secret practice" (密行第一) — his spiritual practice was deep, private, and not outwardly showy. His Buddha-name, "Treading on Seven-Jewel Flowers," is an image of quiet grace: each step falling on precious blossoms. The scene of father and son — Shakyamuni Buddha and Rahula — both present in this assembly, with Rahula receiving his prophecy of future Buddhahood, has a particular emotional resonance. The path that once took a father away from his family now reunites them in the deepest possible way: as fellow wayfarers toward the same destination.
Summary
Chapter 9 grants prophecies to Ananda and Rahula — the Buddha's personal attendant and his own son. Their moment of stepping forward and simply asking "may we have a share in this?" is one of the most human passages in the sutra. The Buddha's response is immediate and generous. Ananda, the great memoriser and keeper of the Dharma, will become Mountain Sea Wisdom Unimpeded Power King. Rahula, the quiet and private practitioner, will become Treading on Seven-Jewel Flowers. Two very different personalities, two different styles of practice, one destination. The chapter confirms that the sutra's promise is not abstract — it is personal, specific, and addressed to each individual who sincerely aspires.
