Meaning

Represents inexperience, learning, and the relationship between teacher and student. The young and ignorant must seek wisdom humbly. A good teacher educates with patience but does not repeat lessons to the willfully ignorant.

Interpretation

Six Yao (Lines) with Classical Quotes

1st Yao (初爻)

发蒙,利用刑人,用说桓棏,以往吝。

English: Dispelling ignorance. It is useful to apply discipline and remove shackles. But pushing too far brings regret. Firm correction is needed but must not be excessive.

2nd Yao (二爻)

包蒙,吉;纳妇,吉;子克家。

English: Tolerating the ignorant with patience brings good fortune. Taking a wife brings good fortune. The son is capable of managing the household. Embrace responsibility with care.

勿用取女,见金夫,不有躺,无攸利。

English: Do not take such a woman in marriage. She sees a wealthy man and abandons her integrity. Nothing is gained. Beware of those who lack genuine virtue.

困蒙,吝。

English: Bound in ignorance, there is regret. When one refuses to learn and remains isolated from wisdom, the path grows narrow.

童蒙,吉。

English: Childlike openness and innocence bring good fortune. The beginner's mind, free from arrogance, is ready to receive wisdom.

6th Yao (上爻)

击蒙,不利为寇,利御寇。

English: Striking against ignorance. It does not help to be aggressive, but defending against it is beneficial. Discipline serves to protect, not punish.
