What is an "asamkhya"?
Asaṃkhya (阿僧祇) is a Sanskrit term for an unimaginably large but technically defined number — variously calculated as 10 to the power of 104 or larger depending on the tradition. In Buddhist cosmology it serves as the basic unit for describing the time spans of bodhisattva practice: the standard teaching is that the path to Buddhahood takes "three great asamkhya kalpas." But Chapter 30 does not stop at asamkhya. It uses asamkhya as a starting point and then multiplies it through a series of further operations — each multiplying the previous by itself — until it reaches numbers that have no names and cannot be spoken. The chapter's purpose is not arithmetic but philosophical: to use mathematics as a ladder that, when climbed to its limit, falls over and reveals that the Dharmadhatu is beyond the reach of any counting system.
From asamkhya to "the inexpressible times the inexpressible" — approaching infinity through mathematics.
The numerical sequence in Chapter 30 is one of the most remarkable passages in Buddhist literature — and one of the most misread. It is not a display of astronomical knowledge or a practical system for counting anything. It is a deliberately constructed path that leads the reader to the edge of language and number and then takes one more step, off the edge. The sequence of named numbers spiralling upward through asamkhya, through "inexpressible," to "inexpressible times the inexpressible" enacts the sutra's deepest teaching: the Dharmadhatu is not just very large; it is not quantifiable by any system that operates within it. To know this is not to give up on understanding but to understand something crucial about the nature of understanding: some realities can only be approached, not grasped.
The bodhisattva abides in this and uses it as a measure, knowing that the realm of beings is inexpressible, the Buddha-lands are inexpressible, the Buddhas are inexpressible, the Buddha-Dharma is inexpressible.
The purpose of the entire numerical exercise becomes clear in this closing summary. The point is not to convey specific quantities but to expand the practitioner's epistemological framework — to habituate the mind to operating at scales where ordinary measurement fails. A bodhisattva who has fully absorbed the teaching of this chapter no longer unconsciously assumes that the number of beings they can help is finite, that the Dharma has been fully captured by any text or doctrine, or that the scope of awakened reality is anything their concepts can contain. "The Dharma is inexpressible" is not a counsel of despair but an invitation to a different relationship with knowledge: more humble, more open, and paradoxically more effective — because it stops trying to fit the infinite into a finite box.
The place of Chapter 30 in the Avatamsaka's overall structure.
After the summit of the graduated path teachings (the Ten Grounds, Chapter 26) and the three chapters describing the high bodhisattva's inner capacities (Chapters 27–29), Chapter 30 makes a structural pivot. Instead of continuing with more graduated-path content, it zooms out — way out — to contemplate the sheer scale of the Dharmadhatu. This is characteristic Avatamsaka rhythm: just when you might think you have grasped the scope of the path, the sutra reminds you that what you are walking toward is not a destination that can be pointed at but a boundless reality that exceeds every concept you can bring to it. The chapter that comes after the Ten Grounds, Ten Samadhis, Ten Penetrations, and Ten Tolerances is a chapter about how all of that is still only the beginning of what is inexpressible. The path is real; the destination is infinite.
Summary
Chapter 30 is the Avatamsaka's mathematical poem about the inexpressible. Starting from asamkhya — itself already beyond ordinary comprehension — the sutra constructs a sequence of ever-larger numbers, each defined as the previous multiplied by itself, until language runs out and the sequence can only be described as "the inexpressible times the inexpressible." This is not number theory; it is a deliberate cognitive exercise designed to exhaust the mind's quantifying habit until it encounters its own limit — and at that limit, discovers that the Dharmadhatu simply does not fit inside any counting system. The bodhisattva who has absorbed this teaching operates with a different kind of knowing: one that holds the incomprehensibility of the Dharmadhatu as a constant background, making every claim to have "figured it out" visible as a premature closure on something that will always remain open and inexhaustible.
