The difference between major marks (相) and minor characteristics (随好).
If Chapter 34 described the ocean, Chapter 35 describes the waves within waves within waves. The 80 minor characteristics (随好, anuvyañjana) are the secondary beauties that accompany the 32 major marks — the quality of the skin, the symmetry of the nails, the evenness of the teeth, the clarity of the eyes. These are typically considered less important than the major marks, and yet the Avatamsaka insists that each minor characteristic radiates 500 lights, and each of those lights has countless further lights as attendants. The theological point is that no quality of the awakened body is trivial. Even the smallest expression of fully realised virtue carries inconceivable beneficial power. In practice terms: no small act of genuine kindness is without consequence; no minor expression of wisdom is without ripple effects.
The mark of perfect light on the sole of the Tathagata's foot, attended by 500 lights: any being who encounters this light will never again regress from supreme enlightenment.
The image of the foot-sole — the most humble, most earthward part of the body — radiating a light that permanently establishes beings in non-regression is rich with implication. It takes the sutra's teaching about the pervasiveness of the Buddha's beneficial power and locates it in the most unexpected place: not the crown, not the heart, not the eyes — but the foot. This is consistent with the Avatamsaka's repeated reversals of hierarchy: the lowest contains the highest, the smallest contains the boundless. The light that touches a being and establishes irreversible progress is not the overwhelming blaze of a cosmic event but something as quiet and humble as the light that falls from where a Buddha walks. The path to non-regression can be opened by the most unassuming contact with awakened reality.
The light of the minor characteristics benefits beings of all six realms — from hell-dwellers gaining cool relief, to hungry ghosts gaining satisfaction, to bodhisattvas' practices reaching fulfilment.
The list of beneficiaries — hell-beings, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, gods, and bodhisattvas — is a complete map of samsaric existence. The Avatamsaka's point is that the Buddha's beneficial activity makes no exclusions. Hell-beings suffering in the most extreme conditions are as much the object of the light's care as the most advanced bodhisattvas. And the specific benefit given to each is exactly what each needs: cool relief for those in heat; satiation for those in hunger; safety for those in fear; peace for those in anxiety; completion for those on the path. This is tailored, intelligent compassion — not generic goodwill — because the light of awakening knows exactly what each being needs and provides exactly that. The chapter is a meditation on the specificity of universal compassion.
The merit of the minor marks' light: the boundless within the detail.
Chapter 35 is the Avatamsaka's most granular expression of holographic theology: the smallest detail — a minor mark on the foot-sole — contains and radiates the full power of awakening. This is not hyperbole but a structural claim about the nature of fully realised Buddha-reality. In a truly interpenetrating universe, no part is merely a part. Each element contains the whole, differently expressed. The light from the minor mark on the crown of the head and the light from the minor mark on the sole of the foot are both complete expressions of the one wisdom-compassion of the Dharmadhatu. The chapter invites contemplation of this non-hierarchical completeness: there is no part of awakening that is less than the whole. Every genuine expression of wisdom and compassion, however small or seemingly peripheral, carries the full weight of the Dharmadhatu behind it.
Summary
Chapter 35 continues the Avatamsaka's contemplation of the Buddha's body by zooming in further: from the major marks of Chapter 34 to the minor characteristics (随好), and from those to the lights that attend each minor characteristic, and from those to the infinite lights that attend each of those lights. This infinite regress of illumination is not baroque decoration but a philosophical point: in the Dharmadhatu, there is no level of detail so small that it falls outside the reach of awakened compassion. The light that benefits hell-beings, quiets hungry ghosts, reassures animals, calms humans, and completes bodhisattvas flows from the most unassuming minor marks on the Buddha's body. The least is the most; the margin is the centre; the detail contains the whole.
